Project Description

This project is part of DFATD’s International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) which is within the Career Focus stream of the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP is designed to offer young Canadian post-secondary graduates the opportunity to gain professional experience through international development work. The Comité de Solidarité Trois-Rivières sends 37 young Canadians in four countries (Senegal Mali Haiti and Nicaragua) to work in the education health environment and governance sectors. The young Canadians will support various community based initiatives that aim to improve poor people’s living conditions mostly by increasing women’s income and improving theirs and their children’s health. The project contributes to increasing the employability of young participants providing them the skills and knowledge they need to secure employment upon their return to Canada.

Expected Results

Expected results include: 1) Increased access by Canadian interns to Canadian labour market opportunities including in the field of international development; and 2) Increased engagement of Canadian interns as global citizens in supporting international development efforts in Canada and abroad.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2017) include: (1) 32 interns (26 female and 6 male) were recruited for a six-month placement abroad to support local partners in promoting rights (including women’s rights) and governance community development ecotourism economic development and nutritional health. The interns all received pre departure training which focused on humanitarian issues cooperation international assistance crosscutting themes intercultural communication health and safety and languages; (2) the interns carried out various activities to support local partners including workshops for women on women's rights business management decision-making; and to identify and strengthen the decision-making structures of the communities in order to assist them in defining their training needs on governance; (3) out of the 32 interns recruited 28 interns (23 women) have successfully completed their internship. Seven local partners (88%) stated that the interns had a significant impact on their development efforts; (4) 27 interns (22 female and 5 male) facilitated public engagement activities in Canada and/or abroad; and (5) 27 interns (21 female and 6 male) reported an increased level of confidence in their ability to secure employment post-internship. 10 interns (7 female and 3 male) found a job including in international development.
