Project Description

This project is part of the Department of Foreign Affairs Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad. L’AMIE’s project entitled “Children’s future at the heart of what we do” provides 40 internships for young Canadians in Bolivia Honduras and Nicaragua. L’AMIE interns work in collaboration with partners in the South in the sector of strengthening basic education securing the future of children and youth (girls and boys young women and young men).

Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access by Canadian interns (young men and women) to Canadian labour market opportunities including in the field of international development; and (2) increased engagement of Canadian interns (young men and women) as global citizens in supporting international development in Canada and abroad.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2017 include: (1) 40 interns (37 female and 3 male) participated in their local partner’s international development efforts and had a positive impact on the local partners’ efforts in the areas of gender equality environmental improvement and children’s rights; (2) the 40 interns (37 female and 3 male) organized activities aimed at encouraging the public to get involved in Canada and abroad; (3) the 40 interns received 95 hours of training that included three hours on development issues seven hours on crosscutting themes and a three-hour public outreach workshop; (4)the 40 interns each carried out an average of 10 activities per month that included a segment on children’s rights the environment and gender equality; and (5) the 40 interns conducted an average of two outreach activities on the theme of the environment children’s rights and GE for a local audience 55% of whom were women.
