Project Description
This project is part of the Department of Foreign Affairs Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad needed to launch successful careers. Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland provides 40 Canadians interns with internships in five countries: Cambodia Vietnam Philippines South Africa and Malawi. The overall focus of the internships is on sustainable environment stewardship. Internships have specific focus on increasing food security stimulating sustainable economic growth and securing the future of children and youth. Other areas of focus are promoting good governance through public sector institutions; supporting private sector development by creating an enabling environment and promoting entrepreneurship; improving health outcomes by improving food security and education.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access by Canadian interns (young men and women) to Canadian labour market opportunities including in the field of international development; and (2) increased engagement of Canadian interns (young men and women) as global citizens in supporting international development in Canada and abroad.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2017) include: (1) 40 interns (30 female and 10 male) have been recruited and sent abroad for a seven months internship in the following sectors: environmental education climate change and food security. Prior to departure interns have received training on multiple operational aspects including physical health and safety diversity and culture intercultural adaptation and gender tools and strategies; (2) interns have accomplished many activities while in the field to support local organizations including conducting a field research on mangroves; the management of the university’s eco-park and the monitoring of its ecosystems; and a behavioural study planned and implemented to observe feeding behaviour of locally cultured tilapia; (3) 40 interns participated in post-placement training on CV writing job search strategies interview skills and networking. All interns facilitated public engagement activities in Canada and/or abroad; and (4) 16 interns (10 female and 6 male) found a job including in the field of international development.
