Project Description

This project is part of DFATD’s International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative. The internships focus on increasing the awareness engagement and participation of Aboriginal youth in international development while providing them with opportunities to expand their employment skills or further their education. The Comité de Solidarité Trois-Rivières initiative offers 16 internships for Aboriginals in Bolivia and Nicaragua to work in preventing violence promoting human rights and health awareness. Interns work with the organizations CEPROSI in Bolivia and Los Ramos in Nicaragua. The project contributes to increasing male and female Aboriginal youth’s employability providing them the skills and knowledge they need to secure employment or pursue their studies.

Expected Results

Expected results include: 1) Increased access by Canadian interns to Canadian labour market opportunities including in the field of international development; and 2) Increased engagement of Canadian interns as global citizens in supporting international development efforts in Canada and abroad.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2017) include: (1) eight interns (7 female and 1 male) were recruited for a four-month placement to support local partners in Nicaragua and Bolivia in the area of women’s economic rights (support for the community ecotourism project) and the fight against violence toward women and children (support activities conducted by the association of women's centers in 22 districts). All interns received pre departure training which focused on humanitarian issues cooperation international assistance crosscutting themes intercultural communication health and safety Spanish and the current issues facing Canada’s Indigenous peoples; (2) out of the eight interns recruited five interns (5 women) successfully completed their internship and carried out various activities to support local partners including urban gardening to bring women together and develop leadership; and the ecological development of a beach to involve the youth of the community. Two local partners (100%) stated that the interns had a significant impact on their development efforts; (3) five interns participated in post-placement training and facilitated public engagement activities in Canada and/or abroad; and (4) five interns reported an increased level of confidence in their ability to secure employment post-internship. Two interns found a job and two other interns returned to school.
