Project Description
This grant represents Canada’s institutional support to the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). UN Women uses these funds along with those of other donors to support its core mandate and functions. UN Women's mandate is focused on eliminating discrimination against women and girls; empowering women; and achieving equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development human rights humanitarian action and peace and security interventions. UN Women works to support global standards for gender equality and helps countries meet these standards by providing expertise and financial support. Canada's support helps to promote equality between women and men and tackle discrimination against women and girls globally.
Expected Results
The expected results for this project as stated by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) in its 2014-2017 strategic plan include: (1) women lead and participate in decision-making at all levels; (2) women especially the poorest and most excluded are economically empowered and benefit from development; (3) governance and national planning fully reflect accountability for gender equality commitments and priorities; (4) a comprehensive and dynamic set of global norms policies and standards on gender equality and women’s empowerment is in place and is applied through action by Governments and other stakeholders at all levels.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved by UN Women through the support of the Government of Canada and other international donors in 2015 include: (1) eight gender-responsive constitutional reforms were completed and 32 gender equality laws were adopted; (2) 29 countries adopted a gender-responsive policy framework for women’s economic empowerment; (3) 26 countries strengthened legislation to address all forms of violence against women; (4) 64 UN entities reported on the UN System-wide Action Plan on Gender Equality (SWAP); (5) UN Women served as the Secretariat of the Global Study on the implementation of SC Resolution 1325 that led to the unanimous adoption of SC Resolution 2242 to improve implementation of text on the Women Peace and Security Agenda; (6) 18 countries adopted National Action Plans on Women Peace and Security; (7) 31 countries increased budget allocations for gender equality commitments; (8) approximately 15 000 civil servants were trained on gender mainstreaming and gender issues; (9) UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women awarded USD $12.8 million and benefited 1 million women girls men and boys; and (10) approximately 1000 private sector companies signed on to the Women Empowerment Principles (WEPs).
