Project Description
This project aims to improve educational attainment and participation of girls and boys aged 2-15 in eight countries with a child friendly approach to learning with play. Project activities include: (1) training of teachers coaches district level education officials and parent-teacher associations in the use of child friendly learning approaches; (2) mobilizing child-led and youth-led clubs and sport leagues to undertake community development initiatives to address barriers to education; and (3) providing technical assistance and mentorship to civil society partners and governments on policies and practices that promote child friendly learning and (4) public engagement activities organized in Canada. Through this initiative teachers and community coaches are providing children with better quality education.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (1) improved participatory and gender-sensitive learning environments that promote play-based learning; (2) improved commitment of community stakeholders to address barriers to education; (3) strengthened education systems to promote gender sensitive child-centered play-based learning policies and practices across communities and (4) Increased engagement of Canadians in activities that promote the value of sport and play to advance quality education in developing countries.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (December 2017) include: (1) 1 358 school principals and school administrators (of which 413 women) have completed continuum of training to build the capacity of teachers to apply child-centered play-based learning methodologies and create a positive learning environment; (2) 4 570 Junior Leaders (of which 2 149 girls) were coached and supported by community coaches to enhance their leadership and advocacy skills and promote gender equality; (3) 144 920 participants (of which 75 920 women and girls) attended play days tournaments and special events related to gender equality and education to raise their awareness on the importance of education the inclusion of girls and the protection of all children; and (4) 478 428 children and youth (of which 201 503 girls) participated in school-based child-centered and play-based learning activities which worked to create a positive learning environment and promoted gender equality. Overall these results contributed to the ultimate goal of the project improved educational attainment and participation of girls and boys between the ages of 2 and15 across 8 countries.
