Project Description
The project supports the deployment of up 338 Canadian election observers (up to 300 short-term observers (STOs) and up to 38 long-term observers (LTOs)) through the Forum of Federations to monitor the first round of the Presidential election in Ukraine on May 25 2014 as well as a possible run-off election on June 15 2014. The project aims to also deploy a Canadian bilateral election observer mission composed of up to 190 observers to the Parliamentary election in Ukraine on October 26 2014. This includes approximately 40 long-term observers and 150 short-term observers who undertake electoral analysis and stakeholder engagement and support the Canadian election observer mission. This project is designed to provide a comprehensive evaluation of Canadian monitoring support before during and after the Ukrainian Presidential and Parliamentary Elections in 2014. Target beneficiaries are the people of Ukraine and key stakeholders in the electoral process who are to benefit from the observations and recommendations stemming from the mission’s final report.
Expected Results
The expected result for this project includes: (1) improved transparency and fairness of the electoral process during Ukraine's 2014 Presidential and Parliamentary elections
Progress & Results Achieved
Of the more than 300 Canadian observers who went to Ukraine for the May 2014 Presidential election 143 of them formed part of Canada’s independent Ukraine 2014 Presidential Election Bilateral Observation Mission. This included 39 long-term observers and 104 short-term observers who carried out electoral analysis and stakeholder engagement and provided support to the Canadian election observer mission.
