Project Description
This project improves the ability of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries' national statistics agencies to provide solid and credible social and economic statistics to policy makers for use in the development of customized programs to improve the social and economic well-being of Caribbean women and men boys and girls. It supports activities in 14 National Statistics Organisations (NSOs) and regional institutions. Some of these activities include: (1) mentoring 270 officers from national and regional statistics offices and set up placements in NSOs on international best practices for national accounts; (2) coaching of 270 persons on internationally recognized methods and tools for social and economic surveys; (3) developing statistics centres of excellence in the region; and (4) training to improve data use and dissemination.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (1) 14 enhanced systems of National Accounts and in the Caribbean; (2) more credible sex-disaggregated socio-economic indicators; and (3) improved sharing and use of sex-disaggregated data leading to better informed policies and programs for improved economic growth and socio-economic conditions for 6.8 million Caribbean citizens.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved at the end of the project (December 2023) include: (1) incorporated 365 (out of a target of 70) recommendations from technical assistance training and workshops into business surveys conducted in the Caribbean region. This led to enhanced systems of National Accounts and more robust business surveys in the region; (2) incorporated 142 (out of a target of 20) recommendations from technical assistance training and workshops into household surveys. This led to the creating of improved household surveys which integrated key sex-disaggregated socio-economic data indicators; (3) National Statistics Offices and regional organisations implemented 12 (out of a target of 10) new and improved information sharing mechanisms. This led to improved sharing of statistical information across the Caribbean; and (4) launched an online Knowledge Base containing generally applicable training materials and resources available to National Statistics Offices in the Caribbean through the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean digital repository.
