Project Description
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) leads and coordinates international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide protect internally displaced persons and those who are stateless and search for lasting solutions to their plight. With the support of DFATD and other donors this project provides protection and assistance to displaced people affected by conflict in the Middle East. Project activities include: (1) providing shelter clothing and other essential non-food items to people of concern; (2) providing adequate sanitation services; (3) working with governments to register asylum seekers and refugees and to help issue identity documents; (4) working to uphold the social and economic standing of persons of concern; and (5) working with governments to support refugee self-reliance and forge peaceful relations between refugees and local citizens.
Expected Results
The expected immediate outcomes for this project include: (1) protection and basic assistance to displaced people provided; (2) populations of concern to UNHCR registered; (3) legal and psycho-social support to survivors of sexual violence provided; (4) national law and policy relating to refugees and internally displaced persons improved; (5) participation of out-of-school children and adolescents in formal and non-formal education programmes ensured; (6) opportunities for displaced people to be self-reliant improved; and (7) the creation of environments conducive to the voluntary return of refugees supported. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people especially women and children.
