Project Description
February 2014 – Nearly one million people in Pakistan are still internally displaced as a result of natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes as well as ongoing security operations in the north west regions. They have limited access to water sanitation and hygiene facilities. With DFATD's support this project is helping to address the emergency water sanitation and hygiene needs of up to 28 000 people who have been internally displaced and are now in Jalozai camp in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Project activities include: (1) constructing rehabilitating and maintaining the camp water pipes network; (2) installing 30 water storage tanks with culturally and gender-sensitive water tap stands; (3) installing 200 soakage pits for sanitation; (4) installing 5 new solid waste collection points; (5) installing 150 new latrines and bathing spaces with cleaning kits; (6) offering hygiene promotion sessions to ensure 4 000 families are aware of good and bad hygiene practices; and (7) providing 8 000 mosquito nets and hygiene kits to 4 000 families.
Expected Results
The expected immediate outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to safe drinking water; (2) adequate and appropriate sanitation facilities provided; and (3) hygiene practices improved. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people especially women and children.
