The fighting has displaced some 710 000 people within South Sudan and more than 170 000 people have sought protection in neighbouring countries. Agricultural production is disrupted and essential basic services such as safe drinking water schools and medical facilities have been shut down or destroyed in the fighting. With DFATD’s support World Vision Canada is providing emergency water sanitation and supplemental feeding to 63 360 conflict-affected and food-insecure people in Warrap State South Sudan. Project activities include: (1) establishing nine new water points in seven health facilities and rehabilitating 15 boreholes for 12 400 people; (2) establishing 24 water committees to manage operate and maintain new water points and constructing 6 blocks of latrines in four communities benefitting over 900 people; (3) training five community hygiene promoters and conducting five sanitation and hygiene training sessions; and (4) providing supplemental feeding to 9 484 children under-five and 1 897 malnourished pregnant or lactating women.
Expected Results
The expected immediate outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to safe drinking water; (2) increased awareness of the importance of proper hygiene to maintain and improve health; (3) increased access to sanitation facilities; and (4) increased access to interventions addressing severe and moderate acute malnutrition. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people especially women and children.
