Project Description
March 2014 - The complex humanitarian situation in South Sudan has become worse since fighting broke out between government and anti-government forces in December 2013. The fighting has displaced some 710 000 people within South Sudan and more than 170 000 people have sought protection in neighbouring countries. Agricultural production is disrupted and essential basic services such as safe drinking water schools and medical facilities have been shut down or destroyed in the fighting. Humanitarian assistance needs include food health care shelter protection services water sanitation and hygiene. With DFATD’s support World Relief Canada is providing emergency water sanitation and hygiene services to 55 980 conflict-affected people in Jonglei State South Sudan. Project activities include: (1) establishing 14 new boreholes and rehabilitating 14 water points serving 14 000 people and 2 333 households; (2) constructing 300 household latrines for conflict-affected people; (3) training six hand pump mechanics and 14 water committees on maintenance repair and testing of water points; and (4) distributing relief items (tarps soap mosquito nets) to 750 vulnerable households.
Expected Results
The expected immediate outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to safe drinking water; (2) increased awareness of the importance of proper hygiene to maintain and improve health; (3) increased access to sanitation facilities; and (4) increased access to relief items. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people especially women and children.
