Project Description

The project seeks to support local governments to successfully manage the impacts and benefits from natural resource development and to promote sustainable economic growth in Colombia and Peru. The project also aims to strengthen the capacity of local governments in mining communities to manage complex social economic and environmental issues associated with mining activity while promoting economic growth that builds more resilient and self-reliant communities. The project is using a regional approach to ensure that the knowledge tools and experience gathered during the project are widely disseminated and shared with other mining communities in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Project activities include: (1) providing local leadership training in areas such as participatory decision making impact assessment and conflict resolution; (2) providing technical assistance and training to local governments to support planning management and service delivery; (3) supporting the preparation of local economic development plans; and (4) providing training to local governments on engaging industry and governments to promote new policies and practices that improve community-company relations.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) strengthened transparency accountability and effectiveness of local governments in the selected mining communities of LAC; (2) improved promotion by local governments of economic growth and diversification that benefits women and men in selected mining communities; and (3) strengthened regional collaboration and improved relations amongst communities the mining sector and governments in select countries and regions.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2019) include: (1) 162 local economic growth projects in two competitive rounds were approved; (2) 831 participants in the CISAL Fund process were trained; (3) 75 Canadian experts have volunteered during the course of the project (2014-2019); (4) fostered direct dialogue with mining companies in all 17 partner local governments where their economic development plans were discussed; and (5) created 46 new jobs via local businesses in the four regions.
