Project Description
The project aims to facilitate trade and investment for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Indonesia with a focus on those owned and operated by women. Recognizing that SMEs are the drivers for poverty reduction and economic growth in Indonesia the project works with the Indonesian government private sector organizations and trade policy experts to address regulatory constraints related to Indonesian SME development and access to markets. The project also provides targeted advisory services to develop commercial opportunities for promising Indonesian SMEs. It promotes Canadian investment opportunities in Indonesia through market research and exchanges between the Canadian and Indonesian business communities.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased sustainable and gender-responsive trade and investment opportunities particularly for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) between Indonesia and Canada; and (2) increased use of trade and investment analysis and regulatory reform by Indonesian stakeholders for expanded trade and investment partnerships between Indonesia and Canada.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (August 2019) include: (1) the project led to a total of Can$7 058 568 in exports generated by 16 targeted small medium enterprises (SMEs) (of which seven are women-led ); (2) ten SMEs (of which six are women-led) participating in the Sustaining Competitive and Responsible Enterprises Program put processes in place that improved their environmental performance; (3) 87.5% government and private-sector project stakeholders applied the knowledge regarding trade and investment analysis; (4) 87.5% government and private-sector project stakeholders applied the knowledge regarding regulatory best practices; (5) 11 manuals 63 training modules 20 reports 80 activity briefs nine Investment Presentations and 20 inputs into the Indonesia Technical Requirements Information System produced for broader knowledge sharing with most of them available in English and "Bahasa Indonesia" at the project website; (6) 110 workshops and training sessions four investment webinars and technical assistance delivered to participants from 28 directorates/units within the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia and 43 other government departments/agencies 500 private sector organizations (firms and associations) and 20 universities/research institutes. The training and workshops reached 3 048 participants (53.5% women) and the dissemination events involved 2 990 participants (of which 77.3% women) with many participants benefitting from joining multiple learning opportunities. 99.4% of participants reported an increase in their trade and investment knowledge and skills.
