Project Description
This project aims to support sustainable agro-economic development in the districts of Jaffna Killinochchi and Mullaitivu in Northern Province Sri Lanka. Project activities include: (1) improving the market-oriented production of resettled farmers seed producers nursery keepers and primary processors; (2) improving milk production by livestock farmers; and (3) strengthening the agriculture extension system. The beneficiaries are poor and marginalized persons most of whom were displaced by the civil war that ended in 2015 with a particular emphasis on women and youth. This is one of two parts of the Agro-economic Development Project which has a total budget of $6 million.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcome for this project is: farming households have improved agriculture production that is sustainable and aligned with market demands.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2018) include: (1) household incomes increased by over 10% for 6 371 farming households (including 1 812 headed by women) through the provision of training and inputs; (2) 4 982 households (including 1 208 headed by women) have increased agriculture production by over 20% including through bringing 780 new acres of land into production; (3) five-fold increase in milk production for 2 140 households (including 976 headed by women) through improved livestock management; and (4) 103 agriculture extension officers trained in gender mainstreaming.
