Project Description
This project aims to support sustainable agro-economic development in the districts of Jaffna Killinochchi and Mullaitivu in Northern Province Sri Lanka. Project activities include: (1) increasing skills for employment; (2) strengthening entrepreneurship skills of women men and youth; and (3) increasing engagement in sustainable local development including the production processing and marketing of agricultural products. The beneficiaries are poor and marginalized persons most of whom were displaced by the civil war that ended in 2015 with a particular emphasis on women and youth. This is one of two parts of the Agro-economic Development Project which has a total budget of $6 million.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcome for this project is: targeted communities engaged in sustainable local agricultural activities.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (December 2017) include: (1) 18 producer organizations representing 13 744 members (including 3 628 women) increased production and sales through the provision of business development services technical skills development and agricultural inputs with sales increasing by 76%; (2) 600 acres of land were reclaimed for cultivation through building 32 bunds to keep salt water out.
