Project Description
This grant represents Canada’s institutional support to the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). UN Women uses these funds along with those of other donors to support its core mandate and functions. UN Women's mandate is focused on the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development human rights humanitarian action and peace and security interventions. UN Women works to support global standards for gender equality and helps countries meet these standards by providing expertise and financial support. Canada's support helps to promote equality between women and men and tackle discrimination against women and girls globally.
Expected Results
The expected results for this project include: the adoption of legislation policies and strategies that strengthen women's economic empowerment and access to resources especially for the poorest and most excluded women. These would include constitutional reform laws and policies that promote women’s inclusion and gender-responsive electoral management. Intergovernmental and inter-agency results include increased women’s participation in leadership and greater coherence in policy advice provided to governments to advance women’s leadership. UN Women also promotes greater leadership and participation by women in peace security and humanitarian action. Expected results include stronger incorporation of gender-equality commitments in conflict and post-conflict responses and greater numbers of women in negotiating delegations participating in peace talks. At the global level expected results include a comprehensive set of global norms policies and standards on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved by UN-Women with the support of the Government of Canada and other international donors in 2013 include: 154 women provincial council candidates trained out of 306 women running for elections in Afghanistan; the adoption of a Gender Equality Act which includes commitments to 40-60% quotas for women in the public service in Malawi; the adoption of a new electoral commission including a 30% quota for women in its administration in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; 3 000 local leaders (women and men) were trained on women’s equal value and rights and the role of men in upholding them in Rwanda; 40 anti-trafficking community vigilance committees were established in six states vulnerable to trafficking in India; a Family Protection law was passed criminalizing domestic violence for the first time in Papua New Guinea’s history; the Oasis Center a safe space for women to gather and develop skills to earn income was established in the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan; and 20 gender related questions which will generate Sudan’s first national statistics on gender were included in its National Household Survey. Results achieved in 2014 include: helped 46 countries to reform and adoption of gender responsive constitutions legal frameworks and policies; supported 42 countries to promote women’s leadership and participation in politics; worked in 76 countries with policymakers economic institutions and with women themselves to address inequalities; assisted 47 countries to strengthen women’s economic empowerment; supported 56 countries to the adopt laws and strategies to end violence against women and girls; helped 23 countries to support women’s leadership in peace and security; assisted 73 countries to ensure accountability for gender equality commitments in national planning systems; and supported 22 countries increase budget allocations for gender equality.
