Project Description

This grant represents Canada’s institutional support to CGIAR (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research) a global partnership that unites organizations engaged in research for a food secure future. CGIAR uses these funds along with other donor funding to achieve its mandate. CGIAR’s mandate is to reduce poverty and hunger improve human health and nutrition and enhance ecological resilience through high-quality international agriculture research partnership and leadership. Canada’s support to the CGIAR contributes to greater food security and improvements in human health and nutrition.

Expected Results

The expected results as stated by CGIAR (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research) include: (1) reduced rural poverty for small-scale farmers through better access to markets; (2) improved food security and nutrition for the poor and undernourished in developing countries; and (3) more sustainable management of natural resources for food production.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved by CGIAR as of the end of the project (December 2014) include: (1) 35 million farmers reached with new technologies or management practices covering 89 million hectares as a result of CGIAR research; (2) 57 new rice 70 new maize and over 100 new wheat varieties released worldwide; (3) adoption of CGIAR-recommended policy reforms in India to use solar irrigation pumps and buy back excess solar energy that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and improves sustainability of groundwater sources; and (4) savings of 15-30% in irrigation water use as a result of laser land leveling techniques implemented in over 1.5 million hectares in South Asia with up to 50% of savings in irrigation water use when combined with additional CGIAR land management practices.
