Syria Crisis - Improving Livelihoods in Lebanon - Save the Children 2013

September 2013 - The humanitarian situation in Syria has rapidly deteriorated over the past year as a result of the civil war in the country. The United Nations estimates that 100 000 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands more wounded due to the violence. Within Syria some 6.8 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance 4.25 million of whom are internally displaced. In addition more than 2 million Syrian refugees are living in host countries in the region. By the end of 2013 the United Nations estimates that 10 million people in Syria will need humanitarian assistance and a further 3.55 million refugees from Syria will have fled to host countries where resources are increasingly overstretched by the influx of people needing assistance. With DFATD support Save the Children Canada shall address the immediate livelihood needs of up to 3 380 households from Syrian refugee and host communities in Akkar District Lebanon. Save the Children shall target registered refugees unregistered refugees and vulnerable host community households in this intervention in order to ensure ongoing acceptance of refugees by the host communities and to address the vulnerabilities of a variety of households. Project activities include: establishing home-based cash-for-work activities for up to 400 households to help families meet their basic food and non-food needs; providing community-led casual labor opportunities to 2 240 households aiming to improve the community environment before the toughest months of winter; and providing unconditional cash transfers to and addition 740 households – unregistered refugees who do not benefit from the standard package of assistance provided to registered refugees – to cope with the winter period.

The expected outputs for this project includes: capacity of 3 380 vulnerable families to meet their basic needs (food and non-food) improved; and coping strategies of Syrian refugee families enhanced. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people especially women and children.
