Project Description
This project aims to reduce the number of deaths caused by diarrheal diseases by reducing health risks in the most vulnerable areas of the Artibonite and Centre departments of Haiti. The project aims to improve access to drinking water for 240 000 people in the communities of the Artibonite and Centre departments of Haiti. The project seeks to improve hygiene and sanitation in 140 schools and 30 health facilities as well as to strengthen the Haitian government's capacity to coordinate sustainable sanitation and health services for the most vulnerable populations in 150 localities. The project works closely with Haitian government partners in water and sanitation health and education both at the national and departmental levels. This project is part of Canada's Maternal Newborn and Child Health commitment.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: improved access in a sustainable and equitable manner to drinking water sanitation and hygiene as well as to hygiene education for children women of vulnerable families especially in rural areas.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of (June 2020): (1) mobilized community approach in sanitation for 326 including 192 in the Artibonite and 134 in the center localities for total sanitation reaching 211 810 people (including 110 141 women). Furthermore 180 localities have been verified and certified as "community without open defecation" (including 120 in the Artibonite and 60 in the Center); (2) the project's financial support provided consumable drinking water infrastructure for 105 000 people (including approximately 54 000 women); (3) reached 60 859 people (including 31 038 women) in 98 sub-communities with 81 accessible outlets supplied with water conservation and treatment products for home use; (4) purchased and installed Five incinerators in five health centers in the Artibonite. Built four waste and shelter storage sites to reinforce the waste treatment area on the sites; (5) 27 113 students (including 13 657 girls) in 102 schools of which 51% girls benefited from a hygiene program including handwashing awareness menstrual hygiene management and the construction of separate clean toilets for girls and boys. Carried out infrastructure work in 46 schools in the Artibonite and 30 schools in the Center departments; and (6) the project has significantly promoted gender mainstreaming in water and sanitation issues in Haiti and empowered women in the beneficiary communities.
