Project Description
This project is intended to increase the resilience of Malians to environmental and social shocks through targeted food security interventions in the Kayes Koulikoro Ségou and Mopti regions. This project is also aimed at strengthening national mechanisms for addressing food insecurity and proposing sustainable solutions through its support for the development of a national food security policy. The activities include 1) supporting the creation and rehabilitation of agricultural productive infrastructure through food assistance operations to create assets; 2) promoting local cereal purchases; and 3) improving the capacities of small-scale producers through the Purchase for Progress initiative.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes of this project include 1) resilience of the targeted communities to food insecurity is improved in a sustainable manner particularly for women; and 2) the national capacity in the area of food security is developed.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2017 include: (1) improved access to food for vulnerable households particularly women through the distribution of 1 296 tonnes of food and monetary transfers totalling 525 879 000 CFA francs benefitting 61 925 people; (2) support for the rehabilitation and construction of agricultural infrastructure by target communities such as five micro-dams three boreholes with solar-pump systems eight dikes four fish ponds the development of six retention ponds eight market garden wells the construction and rehabilitation of three rural roads the creation of two rice fields and a significant number of water soil and vegetation conservation activities; and (3) post-harvest activities including storage and preservation activities to improve product quality better marketing organization and the quest for more lucrative prices. The project contributed among other things to the development of the national food and nutrition security policy and to the institutional reform of the national food security system.
