Project Description
February 13 2013 - Since early January 2013 heavy rains across the southern Africa region have resulted in widespread flooding. In Mozambique which has been hit the hardest the torrential rains have caused the destruction of houses schools health centres and crops and forced affected populations to leave their homes in search of safer areas. With CIDA support UNICEF is helping to provide emergency water and sanitation services nutritional support and protection for vulnerable community members to an estimated 150 000 people that have been displaced or affected by the floods.
Expected Results
Expected results include: (1) Improved access to adequate safe water and sanitation; (2) Reduced vulnerability to water-borne diseases amongst flood-affected populations; (3) Improved access to necessary services and protection for the most vulnerable members of society affected by the floods; and (4) Reduced vulnerability to acute malnutrition resulting from food insecurity amongst vulnerable members of the flood-affected populations. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people particularly women and children.
