Project Description
This project aims to help women children and other victims of conflict gain better access to justice and contributes to re-establishing peace and stability in Mali. The project supports Malian civil-society organizations in working to ensure that Mali's criminal justice system is able to fairly judge cases of corruption and human rights' crimes. The project seeks to ensure better respect for the human rights of Malians fight corruption and impunity from crime and support leaders especially women and youth in their reconciliation and conflict prevention efforts. The project also seeks to support reconciliation and dialogue between conflict-affected communities and works to avoid the outbreak of new violence within Malian society.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (i) human rights advocacy organizations in Malian civil society and justice officials are better trained on violence against women and girls and help to respect the rights of women children and other victims of conflict; (ii) Malian civil society and law professionals help to reduce corruption and impunity in the justice system; and (iii) leaders of Malian society especially women and youth influence dialogue between communities and help to reconcile Malians and to prevent conflicts.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved at the end of the project (March 2020) include: (1) gender-based violence (GBV) awareness sessions were held reaching 155 466 people through media (radio) and public events; (2) 88 077 people have been reached through public events alone (57% of whom are women); (3) 613 people from civil society organizations and justice actors were trained on integrity management and corruption; (4) four high-profile files on serious violations rapes kidnapping and forced marriage committed by presumed members of armed groups involving some 100 victims of whom 62 are children and 16 are minors were prepared and submitted to judicial authorities; (5) 1 339 380 people were informed about legal aid services and those services were provided to 4 111 people; and (6) 3 129 women leaders were trained on prevention and resolution of conflicts GBV and leadership skills. These activities helped strengthen the rights of people affected by the crisis particularly women and minors and helped raise awareness of the culture of impunity and corruption that affect Malians’ rights.
