Project Description
The project aims to increase the number of children especially girls attending school in Garissa and Turkana counties and provide them with a better education. To this end the project is supporting the Government of Kenya to pilot innovative new ways of managing and delivering education for hard to reach children in marginalized and remote arid counties. The project seeks to enhance the quality of teaching and ensure safe and stimulating learning environments for children particularly for girls. It supports the newly established counties of Garissa and Turkana to manage educational resources in a more efficient and transparent manner. It is also the first initiative to pilot the use of mobile phone technology to monitor the quality of learning in remote communities in Kenya which will have a tremendous impact on how decision-makers access accurate and up to date information on schools and establish budget and policy priorities.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (1) increased number of children especially girls who benefit from quality education in a safe and stimulating learning environment in Garissa and Turkana Counties; and (2) more efficient transparent and accountable management of education resources by head teachers and government officials.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2017 include: (1) disbursement of 200 school grants to 70 primary schools in Garissa and 130 primary school in Turkana Counties to undertake projects that were identified and prioritized in the School Development Plans; (2) provided 2 000 hygiene kits 400 science teaching kits 400 math kits 400 early childhood development (ECD) teaching kits and 200 recreational kits to schools benefitting more than 97 000 children in Turkana and Garissa counties; (3) data collected from 2 346 schools of drought-affected counties have been used for advocacy with government promoting coordination response in the ongoing emergency; and (4) 458 children (172 girls and 286 boys) from the 47 counties participated in the Third National Children’s Government conference. These results have contributed to an increase in the number of children especially girls who benefit from quality education in a safe and stimulating learning environment in Garissa and Turkana Counties. They have also contributed to more efficient transparent and accountable management of education resources by head teachers and government officials.
