Project Description
The goal of this project is to ensure that women and girls are better protected from violence exploitation and abuse in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The project contributes to reducing sexual violence by helping to fight impunity for the perpetrators of sexual and gender-based violence and promoting measures to prevent these crimes. Fighting impunity includes strengthening and expanding judicial services improving the processes for investigating and prosecuting crimes involving sexual violence and increasing the knowledge skills and independence of judges and court officials. The project engages local communities in helping to prevent sexual and gender-based violence. It also helps to improve the medical and psychosocial services provided to survivors. Finally it helps survivors earn a living at activities that also benefit their community.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes include: (1) increased accountability and effectiveness of key ministries (Ministry of Justice and Human Rights the Ministry of Gender and the Ministry of Public Health) and civil society organizations in fighting impunity and in providing quality services to survivors; (2) increased leadership of communities human rights groups (women men and youth) civil society and the private sector in promoting gender equality with regard to sexual and gender-based violence.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of December 2016 include: (1) 5 795 victims of sexual and gender based violence (SGBV) were supported with regard to their medical and psychosocial needs; (2) 1 755 cases of SGBV (1 743 women and 12 men) were brought to court; among these 783 legal decisions were rendered (79.6% guilty verdicts and 20.4% acquittals); (3) legal clinics offered legal information and advice services to 10 091 people of whom 58.55% were women; (4) 1 729 adult beneficiaries (1 560 women and 169 men) were reintegrated socio-economically; (5) 665 minors (635 girls and 30 boys) were reintegrated scholastically; (6) 26 schools and 8 universities have included gender in their curriculum for young people across their training modules; (7) 26 cinema sessions enabled 3 843 people (2 250 women and 1 593 men) to have access to information and understand their rights; (8) 120 radio programs on the fight against sexual and gender based violence were aired (total coverage estimated at 15 000 people); (9) 362 indirect victims such as parents spouses grandparents and children of SGBV victims were supported with regard to their psychological needs; and (10) compliance with intake timeframes within 72 hours increased from 20% to 33.6%.
