Project Description

The project aims to improve the learning environment for schoolage girls and boys. The project supports the school feeding program to help the children suffering from chronic hunger and an insufficient diet. The program aims to distribute meals to approximatively 230 000 schoolchildren during two school years 2013-2014 2014-2015 which is helping to increase attendance at the primary school level and improve children’s learning capacity. The project also aims to strengthen local agricultural production by promoting the purchase of as much as 25 percent of the required rice supply from local producers.

Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcomes of this project include: i) increased school attendance of girls and boys and ii) a more effective coordinated and sustainable national school feeding program.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results as of June 30 2015 (end of project): More than 16% of the rice was purchased locally with funds from Canada. For the school year 2014-2015 with funding from Canada WFP has reached more than 485 000 children representing about 75% of the 620 000 pre-school children and primary public schools. These results contributed to increasing access of boys and girls to education and promote children's retention in school. In 2014 attendance rates in schools supported by WFP were 96% for girls and 95% for boys and retention rates were similar. The initiative has also contributed to the creation of a working group including various partners including the Government of Haiti to work on the development of a national policy on school canteens and strengthening of the national program of school canteens (PNCS). Canada's contribution also helped to support the PNCS in its ability to monitor field activities (training monitoring and evaluation).
