Project Description
The suspension of aid to Mali’s Ministry of Education following the March 22 2012 coup d'état has significantly affected Mali’s ability to finance the purchase of textbooks for 2012-13 school year. This initiative in partnership with UNICEF is a one-time short-term project designed to respond to this situation. The project aims to improve learning the quality of education for Malian children by providing textbooks to children and teachers of primary schools in southern Mali.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include : improved learning and teaching conditions for girls and boys in Mali’s primary schools.
Progress & Results Achieved
The following accumulative results were achieved as of March 31 2015: 1) 1 323 814 text books and 60 170 readers were printed and distributed to 531 600 primary and secondary students in all regions of Mali including three northern regions (Gao Kidal and Timbuktu) ; 2) 21 705 teachers’ manuals and educational materials were printed and distributed to the 20 000 teachers of those students; 3) 564 National Education Ministry (NEM) officials were trained on information-gathering and the physical and educational management of text books; and 4) 95% of the target communities were made aware of the key role of text books in child education through messages broadcast on local radio and national television.
