Project Description
This project aims to contribute to sustainable economic growth in Indonesia by improving the employability of graduates from public polytechnic institutes. The project supports the Government of Indonesia in its efforts to strengthen its technical and vocational skills training and education system making it more responsive to labour market needs. Specifically the project aims to increase productivity and strengthen industry competitiveness by building stronger linkages between polytechnic institutes and the private sector and by strengthening the capacity of selected polytechnic institutes to deliver high-quality programs that respond to employer needs in five key sectors: manufacturing infrastructure mining agro-industry and tourism. The project also aims to provide Indonesian education officials with direct exposure to Canadian best practices in technical and vocational training.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes of this project include: the public polytechnic education system in Indonesia responds increasingly to private sector needs; and women men and youth trained at public polytechnic institutes in five priority sectors are more productive when employed.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the Project (December 2019) include: (1) strengthened the capacity of 34 polytechnic institutes through improved quality and alignment of their programs with the job market’s needs; (2) the number of students enrolled in the study programs in five priority sectors (manufacturing infrastructure mining and energy agri-business and agro-industry tourism) increased by 45% to 25 718 (of which 34% female students); (3) the number of polytechnic graduates entering the workforce in the five priority sectors increased by 61% to 6 704 graduates (of which 32.9% women); (4) established 31 Professional Certification Bodies and 230 Competency Testing Units in assisted polytechnics; (5) the number of certified students from all study programs reached 37 416 students (of which 40% women) meeting the National Professional Certification Board standard; (6) 82 industry-endorsed polytechnic revised curricula and 421 signed partnerships with employers/industry associations for skill development services;(7) 22 Centre of Technology established in 20 polytechnics to support partnerships with industry and improve education relevance; and (8) improved accreditation level of 25 Polytechnic’s study programs.
