Transparency in the Extractive Sector

Results achieved of the end of the project (December 2021) include: (1) produced frameworks knowledge products and tools to help Government officials improve transparency and monitoring of extractives sector operations. These include data management review data gap analysis and a data mainstreaming roadmap to move towards systematic disclosure of extractive sector data following the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) standards. As a result the Government of Indonesia has increased its capacity to mainstream extractive data collation and disclosure into regular Government institutional processes thereby ensuring the sustainability of processes. This leads the public to better data access; (2) established institutional mechanisms to comply with the EITI standard. With this standard in place the Government of Indonesia internalized ownership and financing for preparing extractive reports to EITI from 2018 onwards. By 2019 Indonesia had succeeded in disaggregating its extractive reporting and was assessed by EITI Board to have made ‘Meaningful Progress’ in implementing the 2016 EITI Standard. In 2020 (NR4D) helped ensure a smooth transition of ministerial ownership of EITI within the Government of Indonesia; and (3) supported the Government of Indonesia in establishing Extractives Data Portal. From 2016 to 2017 NR4D supported the development of the Indonesia extractive industries data portal which provides an online platform for accessing all data in EITI reports (e.g. production revenues and licenses). NR4D has also undertaken strategic public outreach activities to maximize the public’s utilization of the EITI reports. This project is a sub-project under the broader project Natural Resources for Development project (2015-2021)
