Project Description

This project improves access to education for conflict-affected children and youth in the Colombian departments of Cauca Caquetá and Nariño. Access to quality education helps children and youth resist recruitment by illegal armed groups and participation in criminal activities. Project activities include: (1) reintegrating out-of-school children and youth into the regular school system or the flexible education model which provides afterschool access; (2) helping schools and secretariats of education develop education improvement plans that enhance curricula and pedagogical approaches; and (3) implementing a pedagogy of peacebuilding and non-violence in the classroom. The consortium Save the Children Canada and the Norwegian Refugee Council implemented the project.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project included: (1) increased access to education for out-of-school children and youth in the departments of Cauca Caquetá and Nariño; (2) improved education quality for conflict-affected girls boys and youth in the departments of Cauca Caquetá and Nariño; and (3) improved capacity of secretariats of education and municipal authorities to provide quality education for children and youth.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of project March 2019 include: (1) enrolled 52 869 out-of-school children youth and adults (of whom 57% are women and girls) in flexible education models that provide education access; (2) trained 24 744 children and youth (of whom 53% are girls) in child rights and protection communication skills gender equality ethnocultural resilience and peace-building enabling them to remain in the education system; (3) 3 732 teachers (of whom 60% are women) improved their teaching methods through professional development activities leading to more relevant and quality education; (4) 671 teachers (of whom 61% are women) learned how to integrate gender equality principles in their pedagogical models; (5) introduced 698 representatives of ethnic organizations and community leaders to the education sector’s legislation and policies on ethnocultural considerations; (6) developed seven partnerships between private companies and higher education centres to improve quality education in schools and youth access to labour markets; and (7) provided 118 educational institutions with advice and support to facilitate access to the education system for children adolescents and youth and ensure their continued presence within it. Efforts to achieve these results favoured collaboration between public entities teachers civil society organizations and other education partners to build safer learning environments for children and youth living in armed conflict areas.
