Project Description

The project addresses the constraints that prevent smallholder farmers in Northern Ghana from producing sufficient food to feed themselves and generate revenue and from becoming resilient to unexpected events such as droughts. It offers transformative and sustainable solutions that address the root causes behind the lack of access to sufficient nutritious food and the vulnerability to food shortages in the northern regions while also promoting community and household resilience to external shocks and stresses. Expected activities include: practical training for 21 000 smallholder farmers and service providers in sustainable cropping practices livestock production aquaculture and water management; provision of tools and services including technical assistance in climate change adaptation and disaster risk management practices to 150 communities to improve productivity; strengthening and promoting gender-responsive systems of agricultural extension and support; training for 21 000 women and men in income generating activities; and strengthening access for 21 000 smallholder farmers to high-value markets in selected agricultural and non-agricultural sub-sectors

Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: Increased diversified and more equitable agricultural production for male and female smallholder farmers and their households; increased diversified and more equitable incomes and assets for rural food insecure men women and their household in the Upper East and Upper West regions of Ghana.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2017 include: (1) a total of 21 167 farmers (70% women) have received support to undertake crop and livestock production income generating activities and aquaculture production; (2) 4 600 women have been engaged in income generating activities resulting in gross margins of 20% or more a significant milestone towards sustainable and profitable business; (3) 274 community agriculture workers were trained and 16 000 farmers reached with extension services (education and training on good agricultural practices and technologies) ; (4) access to land for women farmers reached 100% in all project communities and land sizes for women farmers increased from ¼- ½ an acre last year to an average of 1 acre; and (5) women have reported better relations at home feeling more respected by their spouses increased participation in decision making being viewed as sources of key information and knowledge and being recognized as indispensable partners in the households as a result of project interventions. These have contributed to improved food security increased incomes and resilience among vulnerable and poorest populations in the project communities.
