Project Description
This project seeks to increase access to electricity for nearly 75 000 individuals (12 500 households) in more than 292 rural communities thereby helping to improve their quality of life and economic opportunities. By providing access to electricity the project also aims to help communities implement productive activities. Project activities include the following: (1) extending the electrical distribution network including lighting internal facilities and connections; (2) supporting commercial initiatives to promote rural development through the efficient use of electricity; (3) training women owners of small businesses; (4) providing training on gender equality principles and local economic development opportunities related to the newly acquired access to electricity; (5) providing support for institutional strengthening of the National Company for Electrical Transmission (ENATREL) to facilitate fieldwork.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate results of this project include the following: (1) more equitable and sustainable access to electricity for women men and children in Nicaragua’s northern and western departments; (2) productive use of electricity by women men and children in Nicaragua’s northern and western departments.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2016 include: (1) the power grid was extended by 139 km (23% of the target); (2) 59 rural communities were connected to the national power grid (20% of the target); (3) 13 932 people representing 2 322 rural families small businesses and institutions were connected to the national power grid (19% of the target); (4) 108 micro and small businesses (including 150 women (60%) and 102 men (40%)) of the target of 200 were pre-identified for entrepreneurial development support and to receive possible subsidies for investment in newly electrified rural communities.
