Project Description

The project aims to improve learning outcomes for girls and boys in the Dadaab refugee camps and pastoralist host communities by expanding quality alternative basic education opportunities for out-of-school children and youth.

Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: improved quality of alternative basic education that is responsive to the rights and protection of children especially girls in Dadaab refugee camps and Fafi and Lagdera host communities.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of April 2016 include: (1) the 10 host community centres are now nationally registered and their management has been handed over to the Government of Kenya while the 12 refugee centres will be absorbed by the other education partners in Dadaab; (2) 22 Alternative Basic Education (ABE) Centres have been established and are operational (12 in refugee camps and 10 in host communities); (3) a total of 4 959 learners are enrolled in the ABE centres; (4) 1 511 children have successfully transitioned from the ABE centres to the formal primary schools; (5) 728 girls and young mothers have completed vocational training and provided with sanitary kits (sanitary pads soap etc.); (6) 22 Boards of Managements of schools were legally constituted and operationalised with 420 members trained on school governance and accountability; and (7) operational guidelines for ABE centres have been developed enabling the project model to be replicated in other appropriate contexts in Kenya. These have contributed to improve quality of alternative basic education that is responsive to the rights and protection of children especially girls in Dadaab refugee camps and Fafi and Lagdera host communities.
