Project Description

This project aims to reduce illness and death among mothers newborns and children in the province of Zambezia the second most populous province with some of the highest maternal and child mortality and morbidity rates in Mozambique. The project aims to work directly with the Zambezia Provincial Directorate of Health to expand health services and improve the quality of care available to mothers newborns and children. The project seeks to help the Zambezia Provincial Directorate of Health to better respond to the health needs of mothers newborns and children promote better health for mothers and higher survival rates for children and reduce deaths from infectious diseases. The project also seeks to improve the management capacity of the Provincial Directorate so that it functions more efficiently effectively and sustainably over the long term.

Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (i) increased use of maternal newborn and child health services in Zambezia in a manner that promotes gender equality; and (ii) enhanced effectiveness of Zambezia Provincial Health Directorate including in integrating gender equality.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2020) include: (1) training and technical assistance was provided to health service providers resulting in a number of improvements over the period 2016 to 2019 including an increase in institutional childbirth delivery from 72% compared to 80.8%; an increase from 30% to 39% in new users of family planning; an increase in post-partum care coverage from 72% to 99.7%; and a reduction in intra-hospital maternal mortality ratio from 85 per 100 000 births to 77; (2) obstetric care was improved through the training of 89 surgical anesthesiology and instrument technicians and 20 maternal and child health nurses; and (3) regular obstetric fistula campaigns were held which resulted in the treatment of 850 women since 2014.
