Project Description
The project aims to enhance food security or access to safe sufficient and nutritious food for approximately 259 000 people in the Casamance Fatick Kaolack Kaffrine Tamba Kédougou Louga and Matam regions. To reach this goal the project seeks to increase rice fruit and vegetable production through the provision of training and technical advice seeds as well as the construction of land protection and irrigation structures.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of project (June 2013) include: (1) 874 producers (532 women and 315 men) were trained on water management and land development; (2) cultivable land increased by an average of 1.8 hectares per household (1.08 for men and 1.89 for women); (3) rice production increased by an average of 125 kg per household (151 kg for men and 121 kg for women) and rice yields increased by an average of 128 per cent in the Kolda and Sédiou valleys; and (4) average earnings increased to $ 46.76 ($ 125.74 for men and $ 43.83 for women). These results have helped to improve the food security of vulnerable groups including access to safe nutritious and sufficient food and to preserve and rationally manage Senegal's natural resources.
