Project Description
This project provides support to the World Food Program (WFP) for its Protracted Relief and Recovery Operation (PRRO) in Mozambique. The PRRO addresses the impact of natural social and health risks in the seven most vulnerable provinces of Mozambique through the integration of food assistance into the following four components: (i) disaster preparedness and response; (ii) livelihood protection and promotion; (iii) social assistance; and (iv) health and nutrition. Through the PRRO’s food assistance activities WFP assists a monthly average of 260 000 vulnerable and most food-insecure people in the targeted provinces in Mozambique.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (December 2011) include: food assistance provided to 535 683 beneficiaries living in vulnerable conditions due to weather shocks or health risks; 100% of this food was procured locally in areas of Mozambique with a surplus; access to markets and livelihood opportunities increased for marginalized populations through local purchases of food commodities; nutritional support provided to a monthly average of 5 555 children 3 341 pregnant and lactating women and 9 554 HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis patients diagnosed with moderate acute malnutrition; approximately 2 800 metric tonnes of Super Cereal (a specialised nutritious food) distributed at health centers; and through the national Home-Based Care (HBC) program 48 350 beneficiaries affected by AIDS received food and nutrition assistance as part of basic clinical and social support services. Through these results the project has contributed to reducing hunger among people living in vulnerable conditions.
