Project Description
This project contributes to the Haitian Ministry of Education’s Back-to-School program. The project provides tuition waivers for 35 000 school children and school kits (backpacks uniforms books and pencils) to an additional 35 000 children. It also includes clearing debris from sites and building 13 schools in three provinces most affected by the earthquake. The schools are being built to withstand future hurricanes and earthquakes and are equipped with several classrooms furniture educational equipment sanitary facilities administrative offices running water and electricity.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (June 2018) include: (1) 412 000 textbooks 70 000 school kits and 120 000 uniforms for 35 000 students were distributed to 282 primary schools in 10 departments; (2) tuition grants were provided to 271 schools in the departments of Artibonite and Ouest giving more than 60 400 students free access to school; and (3) 13 schools were built equipped (school furniture electricity system computer kitchen preschool and sports equipment) and put into service. They comply with hurricane- and earthquake-resistant standards.
