Project Description
The goal of the project is to reduce chronic hunger and undernutrition among schoolchildren increase enrolment and attendance rates in primary schools and improve children’s learning capacity. It aims to provide a daily meal to approximately 400 000 schoolchildren for the 2010-2011 school year (over 14 million meals in total). The project promotes local agriculture by purchasing up to 25% of its rice requirements from local producers. It also assists the Ministry of National Education in rebuilding Haiti’s national school feeding program which was weakened by the earthquake of January 12 2010.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2012) include : Canada’s contribution allowed 484 200 pupils in 1 489 primary schools to eat a hot meal every school day. The amount of rice purchased locally increased to nearly 25 percent of the total supply in rice for the program. This also helped strengthen local agricultural production. These results helped reduce chronic hunger and malnutrition among schoolchildren increase attendance in primary schools and improve children’s learning capacity.
