Through this project CIDA is supporting UNICEF to improve the cold chain capacity and storage for vaccines at the national and regional levels in response to a critical shortage of vaccine storage at these levels. UNICEF’s activities are part of the broader framework of support for immunization services in Tanzania namely the Government of Tanzania’s Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) which aims to reduce childhood morbidity mortality and disability in Tanzania. CIDA’s support is building on and reinforcing the longstanding partnership between UNICEF and the Government of Tanzania aimed at building the capacity of the Government of Tanzania for vaccine forecasting procurement and management.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of April 2012 include: six walk-in cold rooms (now storing 26 350 litres of vaccine including against tuberculosis polio measles and tetanus) were procured distributed and installed at the national level ; and walk-in cold rooms and generators were procured for all 26 regions. In addition all health workers in all health facilities across the country received training to improve immunization services. By ensuring that adequate and functional cold chain storage for vaccines are available and capacity for cold chain management at the national and regional levels in mainland Tanzania are adequate this project will help to reduce child mortality from 91 to 54 per 1 000 live births.
