Project Description
In 2010 a contribution to the multi-donor Haiti Reconstruction Fund for health and education activities was approved. There were delays in implementation and in June 2013 the funds were redirected to the World Bank Education for All program for school feeding of Haitian children. The World Bank Education for All program is designed to support the Government of Haiti's plan for rebuilding the education system with a focus on improving the access and quality of primary education. This multi-donor project supports the "school feeding" component of the program with the objective of increasing the attendance rate of students in primary schools. It aims to provide two daily meals (breakfast and lunch) to 27 252 school children per school year; the meals are supplemented by micronutrient additives iodized salt and de-worming treatment for students. The project also provides technical assistance to the Programme National des Cantines Scolaires (PNCS) in order to improve its operations and ensure sustainability.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project component funded by Canada (December 2017) include: As of 2016 all grants to students have been granted. Canada has contributed to the multi-donor support for the delivery of hot vitamin and micronutrient enriched meals from 2014 to 2017. This component has fed a cumulative number of 225 545 students (49% girls) thereby largely surpassing the initial project goal. Technical support has been provided to local communities for the management of canteens in public schools situated in rural areas; the establishment of a hotline and a local monitoring network for canteen food supply delivery has been highly successful and has helped in engaging more parents. It has also contributed to empower local entrepreneurs that provide local products.
