Project Description
The goal of the project is to support the Government of Malawi in improving the quality and relevance of basic education in Malawi. The project aims to increase the capacity of teachers to apply new learner-centered gender sensitive teaching methodologies as well as methods of continuous assessment of student performance. It also aims to increase the supply of qualified teachers particularly women in primary schools across Malawi especially in rural areas.
Expected Results
Expected results for this project are: (1) improved support system for IPTE student-teachers in primary school; (2) improved student-teacher teaching and learning practices by student-teachers in teaching practice schools; and (3) increased usage of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for Mentors and Head Teachers.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project March 2014 include: (1) requirements for the practicum year of the primary teacher education system redesigned; (2) Teacher Training College support systems for student teachers in their practicum year upgraded; (3) 1 886 head teachers and mentor teachers at Teacher Practice Schools trained to better supervise student teachers; (4) teacher certification regime changed to include an assessment of student teacher performance during the practicum year; (5) strengthened partnerships between Teacher Training Colleges and Teaching Practice Schools; (6) distributed 323 300 primary school books 3 180 resource books 19 500 mentoring guides 10 000 program handbooks 66 000 student teacher experience journals and 1 500 gender responsive pedagogy manuals; (7) gender equality issues introduced into Teacher Training Colleges 376 College lecturers trained in gender responsive pedagogy; (8) Continuous Professional Development targeting supervision and mentorship of practicum year student teachers.
