Project Description
The project supports the implementation of the Strategic Plan of Comprehensive Community-Based Rehabilitation in Tanzania (CCBRT) a Tanzanian non-governmental organization and one of the only providers of health services to disabled Tanzanians. Some of the major activities of the Strategic Plan are: provision of quality preventive curative and rehabilitative services to people living with disabilities particularly children and women in underserved areas; human resources and capacity development; outreach advocacy and awareness-raising on disability issues; and ensuring that adequate infrastructure and medical equipment are available to vulnerable groups. Through this project and the work of CCBRT disabled and vulnerable Tanzanians including women and children in particular are expected to see improved quality gender-sensitive preventive curative and rehabilitative services.
Expected Results
The intermediate outcomes for this project include: (1) improved equitable utilisation of quality gender sensitive preventive curative and rehabilitative services by socially vulnerable children women and men; and (2) people living with disabilities particularly vulnerable women and children participate as equal members in society.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project include: (1) all Comprehensive Community-Based Rehabilitation in Tanzania (CCBRT) heads of departments and 22 management staff participated in LEAN management training; (2) CCBRT’s new Strategic Plan (2013-2017) was put in place; (3) 717 people were trained to act as ambassadors for the fistula programme which helped refer 85% of fistula and cleft lip or palate patients to specialized health facilities; (4) in 2017 alone a total of 15 000 children under the age of five received free treatments from CCBRT including orthopaedic surgeries burns clubfoot and 25 000 families were supported by Community Based Rehabilitation; (5) CCBRT beneficiaries received 70 532 eye consultations 7646 eye surgeries 427 Clubfoot surgeries and 1012 fistula surgeries) 1 329 Tanzanian clinicians were trained; and (6) 3 469 children gained access to mainstream or special needs education. These have contributed to improve the quality of preventive curative and rehabilitative services for disabled and vulnerable Tanzanians particularly women and children.
