Project Description

The project aimed to facilitate the legitimate fair and peaceful delivery of the 2011 Referendum on Self Determination for South Sudan to help ensure it would be valid in the eyes of the Sudanese people and the international community.

Progress & Results Achieved

The January 2011 referendum which resulted in an overwhelming 99% of voters in the ten states of South Sudan voting for independence was one of the final steps in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). Through a contribution to The Carter Centre's South Sudan referendum observation mission the project supported the deployment of international observers to monitor and report on the referendum process including voter registration polling and tabulation across Sudan as well as out-of-country voting. The project also supports the observation of other key democratic processes such as the South Kordofan elections (postponed) and the popular consultation processes in South Kordofan and Blue Nile.
