Project Description

This project aims to bring about sustainable improvements in nutrition and food security for 8 000 households in Kassala East Sudan. Project activities focus on: (1) increasing agricultural production and productivity at the household level; (2) improving employment and livelihood possibilities particularly for women and youth; and (3) building community capacity to mitigate conflict and foster economic growth. By addressing the scarcity of livelihood opportunities and food insecurity and fostering cooperative approaches to local development the project is helping to improve local stability and reduce poverty.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2015) include: (1) 995 beneficiaries were trained in improved agricultural and livestock production techniques; (2) approximately 106 km of livestock routes were demarcated based on community consultations contributing to peace-keeping and the promotion of coexistence between farmers and pastoralists in the targeted areas; (3) a total of three hafirs (large water reservoirs) were rehabilitated for livestock use; and (4) 144 cooperative group members received business skills training. A total of 11 594 households (approximately 69 564 individuals) were supported through this initiative which contributed to improving the food and nutrition security of the targeted population in Kassala State especially for women and youth.
