Project Description
The project contributes to sustainable peace and economic development in Sudan and South Sudan by providing former combatants and their households with alternative livelihoods and by addressing issues of local instability related to their reintegration. Equipping former combatants with alternative livelihoods and new skills is essential to ensuring their smooth transition back into civilian life. The project aims to benefit at least 4 600 ex-combatants and vulnerable groups (400 women 200 disabled) associated with the armed groups and is a part of the broader United Nations Development Program (UNDP) initiative for disarmament demobilization and reintegration (DDR) in Sudan and South Sudan.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (June 2012) include: 3 792 ex-combatants (of which 418 are women and 516 are disabled) received individual counselling to help them choose the best livelihood option as a means of earning a living based on their skills experience and the local economic conditions. The ex-combatants who chose agriculture received training in crop production vegetable production irrigation methods pest control and basic marketing skills to maximize incomes as well as a starter package of assorted seeds and tools. Those who chose livestock received training in cattle restocking and production and poultry husbandry practices. These ex-combatants also received support packages that included a stock of feed and animals de-worming medicines and links to access the support of Community-based Animal Health Workers. This reintegration support has contributed to increasing food production and stimulating local economies. Public information and awareness campaigns regarding disarmament demobilization and reintegration processes including fact sheets reports newsletters booklets banners and songs/theatre reached approximately 42 000 individuals. These outreach efforts helped to generate buy-in from communities and traditional leaders to advocate for greater dialogue and a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict. In targeted communities 66.7% of those surveyed felt that the security situation had improved in areas where reintegration services were provided to ex-combatants through this project.
