Project Description
Tonj East Basic Services Community Project South Sudan seeks to contribute to lasting peace in Southern Sudan by delivering peace dividends in the form of health education and water and sanitation. In addition to developing infrastructure for basic services such as schools and health care centres activities focus on developing community committees to increase community participation in service delivery and to improve accountability at other levels of local government.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2013) include: (1) the construction and equipping of three primary health care centre facilities in Tonj East County in Warrap State enabling the population of Tonj East county (116 572 individuals) to access quality primary health care; (2) the construction and equipping of two primary schools in Akier and Makuac increasing enrollment by 60% in Akier and 76% in Makuac since 2010; and (3) 36 boreholes were drilled and 10 rehabilitated to serve 23 000 people with clean water. These results have contributed to improved health and education in Tonj East County and strengthened community oversight and participation.
