Project Description

The project aims to secure sustainable livelihoods for Sulawesi's smallholder farmers including women through forestry and agroforestry. It is designed to support the planting management and marketing of more diverse and environmentally suitable tree crops. The project addresses sustainable economic growth by investing in people growing businesses and building economic foundations. Its integrated landscape approach promotes sustainable agricultural and natural resources management by: (1) enhancing people’s technical capacities (2) growing business and livelihood opportunities through the establishment of agroforestry-based enterprises and (3) building economic foundations through the identification of market opportunities and linkages. The project aims to work on these issues at the village district and provincial levels to enhance equitable resource access use and good environmental governance with local multi-stakeholder engagement and ownership.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved sustainable and gender equitable use of agroforestry and forestry products for livelihoods by poor women and men; (2) increased equitable involvement of women and men in participatory governance of land use and natural resources at sub-district and district levels; and (3) improved integrated management of landscapes and ecosystems by local stakeholders.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (June 2017) in 10 districts in 3 provinces of Sulawesi include: (1) livelihoods have been improved with increased income for over 636 000 people (52% women) 348 tree nurseries and 562 farmer demonstration trials established and 114 agroforestry enterprises developed or strengthened; (2) governance of land use and natural resources planning has improved including strengthened capacity of 195 institutions nearly 39 communities and 8 429 people; and strengthened local land-tenure and governance models; (3) over 780 000 hectares of agroforestry agriculture and forest systems are being managed more sustainability including 73 communities in 10 districts benefitting from livelihood conservation strategies environmental service schemes and vulnerability assessment tools to identify map and monitor threats to the local environment; and (4) planned targets for 30 to 50% of women’s participation have been met in most activities with gender sensitivity training resulting in agricultural teams actively engaging women in decision-making and adopting their ideas. In all three areas targets have been exceeded.
