Project Description
The project represents Canada’s contribution to a basket fund established and managed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The fund’s overall objective is to ensure effective coordination of the support provided by partners in Mali’s electoral process. Postponed since the coup d'État of March 22 2012 presidential elections which were originally scheduled in April 2012 were held in August 2013.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: funding of voter awareness and civic education initiatives to help to increase voter turnout especially among women and youth; and finalization of the agreed electoral roll (RAVEC).
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved collectively through the UNDP pooled fund until March 2014: 1) a seminar on electoral fraud and litigation management related to elections was held and was attended by participants from political parties civil society organizations civil and governmental structures involved in the elections; 2) 14 civil society organizations have conducted outreach and education of voters in eight regions of Mali and the district of Bamako; 3) involvement of civil society actors in the electoral process has increased the diversity and equality between women and men among voters who participated in the poll; 4) communication tools (such as posters leaflets and banners) developed by the project contributed to the good conduct of citizens in the polling stations to improving compliance with the electoral law and to reaching a participation rate electoral estimated at 38% nationally the highest rate in the political history of Mali (including meaningful participation in northern Mali despite the logistical and security constraints). These results have helped to ensure the safe conduct of elections in accordance with the electoral law.
