Project Description
The project builds the capacities of rural communities in the departments of Tahoua and Keita in Niger and helps to prevent and manage food crises. The project empowers communities by creating community grain banks supporting agricultural production and training food security committees and communal councils to monitor the local food situation. Women play a significant role at every level of the project implementation.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved during the 2010-2011 fiscal year include: 24 food security committees were established and 96 members of those committees (50% women) received training including literacy training in the five communes where the project is implemented. 33 new grain bank stores were built and 38 new grain bank management committees (266 members 55% women) were established and received training on their roles and responsibilities. Thus all grain banks established through the project are operational and efficiently manage their inventory. During the major food crisis of 2010 14 753 families benefited from the sale of 1 011 tonnes of grain at lower prices in the 85 villages where the project is implemented. Moreover temporary jobs were created in the five communes over a six-month period. These jobs substantially increased the income of vulnerable families.
