Project Description

In recent years a large number of people have returned to South Sudan and reintegration of returnees places a strain on already weak infrastructure and basic services. This initiative seeks to improve socio-economic conditions amongst returnees internally displaced persons and local community members in three states of South Sudan. In Northern Bahr el Ghazal state the project provides male and female youth with vocational training and livelihoods opportunities and women with adult literacy numeracy and life skills training. In Upper Nile and Unity states teachers receive English pedagogical and gender equality training to equip them to teach the education curriculum. By increasing employment for both youth and skilled teachers the project contributes to the overarching goal to build up the capacity of civil society and government institutions to respond to the education and livelihood needs of the people.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2014 include: (1) 747 project beneficiaries (726 women and 21 men) graduated from the Basic Adult Literacy Program which included training in literacy numeracy and life skills; (2) 71 youth (41 young women and 30 young men) received vocational and life skills training; (3) 330 teachers (147 women and 183 men) participated in teacher training and completed the English Language Training Program; and (4) 165 children (80 girls and 85 boys) were enrolled in the Early Childhood Education Program allowing mothers who normally care for children at home to participate in literacy and vocational training. These results have contributed to increased literacy numeracy and life skills among women increased livelihood skills among youth as well as increased skills in English language pedagogy and gender sensitivity among teachers who participated in the program.
